2015 Reunion San Diego July 28-Aug 2, 2015

Postby Jerry Nicholson » 01 Apr 2015, 18:15

UPDATED July 19, 2015

This looks to be our largest reunion. They seem to grow each year.

We picked up 3 additions this week.
Thomas Smith 66-67 Ordnance, Wayne WV
Dennis Duval 68-69 Com/Nav +1 (Cheryl) Portland, Or
Tim Jackson +1 (Becky) 63-66 Radar

Most of what we are doing is within walking or a short taxi distance. Several of
us are driving down so there will be some transportation available on site. The
hotel has a comp airport shuttle service. Call the hotel when you get to the airport for shuttle directions.

There are several restaurant /bars within several blocks of the hotel. This will
probably be where we end up Tuesday night after checking into hotel.

Because of the attack in Tenn there might be heightened security measures at MCRD. It is possible they might close the base. I will call on Monday and check if there are any additional measures we must take. Make sure you have government issued photo ID and insurance/reg info for your car if you drive.

Here is what I have come up with for possible reunion activities. Remember, we
are getting together primarily to socialize and everyone can do as much or as
little of the activities as they want.

============================================
OK, Folks. I am all excited to see everyone this summer.

Here is what I have come up with for the reunion activities. Remember, we are getting together primarily to socialize and everyone can do as much or as little of the activities as they want. There is no obligation here. I do need to get the hotel info going though, to see if I can get us reduced rates. Here are two likely candidates that are in the downtown area on different sides of the bay. They are within walking distance of most of the downtown attractions.

The first thing I need to know is if these prices are too high and who is likely to be there. I will probably try to get a block of 10-15 rooms.

Points Of Interest
Seaport Village USS Midway Museum Navy Pier Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Port of San Diego
Maritime Museum of San Diego Westfield Horton Plaza San Diego Convention Center B Street Cruise Ship Terminal
Petco Park

Day 1 Tuesday July 28 arrive & check in at hotel.
Day 2 Wed July 29 tour Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar.
Day 3 Thur July 30 tour Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
Day 4 Fri July 31 attend Recruit Graduation at MCRD.
Day 5 Sat Aug 1 Social time for marines & possibly tour USS Midway Museum.
Day 6 Sunday Farewells Check out/Return Home

If anyone has any ideas or any contacts at these places I welcome your help in expediting this process.

These are Expedia rates, but I might get them to honor these rates or maybe slightly lower rates for us.

Hi Everyone,

I was not able to get a discounted hotel rate unless we could guarantee 26 rooms. I don't think we can do that. So, everyone is pretty much on their own on the
room situation. Most folks indicated a preference for the Hampton Inn and Suites 1531 Pacific Highway, San Diego, California, 92101, USA
+1-619-233-8408. Today Expedia rates are $188 non refundable and $211 refundable. The Hampton website rates today are $219 refundable and non refundable advanced
purchase is $197. Also there are many more choices for lodging in the San Diego area that are more economical than the Hampton Inn. Please feel welcome to
consider other lodging options if it fits your situation better.

Additional Hotel Info from Fred Davidson:
California Suites Hotel $69.00 per night 866-307-9227
Best Western Golden Triangle Inn $110.00 per night 866-280-5236
Regency Corporate Living $107.00 per night 866-310-3405
Motel Six San Diego North $104.00 per night 866-327-6247

As far as the details go, after some good suggestions from the group we might try to do these activities.

Day 1 Tuesday July 28 arrive & check in at hotel.
Day 2 Wed July 29 tour USS Midway Museum.
Day 3 Thur July 30 tour Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar.
Day 4 Fri July 31 attend Recruit Graduation at MCRD.
Day 5 Sat Aug 1 Free Day with no planed activities.
Day 6 Sunday Farewells Check out/Return Home

A dinner cruise for Wed or Thur night has been suggested and there are 2 different companies. Both range from about $70-100 per person. This would be something
each person would do on their own. The only decision for us would be which cruise to take.
